BUT, GOD
It was a Sunday in 2016 and my mom and I were having brunch at the park on Ocean Blvd in Santa Monica. The subject of our upcoming family trip to Maui came up.
Mom: You know, you can bring a date on the trip. The house we rented has plenty of space.
Me, chuckling: Mom, that trip is in 2 months. I’ve been single for 10 years, I’ve just had my heart broken for the umpteenth time, and if I meet someone between now and then, that is way to soon to invite him on a family trip for a week.
Mom: You never know! I’m just saying you’re welcome to bring someone.
Me, slightly annoyed: Thanks. It’s not happening.
Mom: But, God.
Me, stuck, because who am I to limit God: Okay, fine, yes. But, God. If the love of my life shows up in the next 2 months, I’ll think about it. But don’t get your hopes up.
Nine days later I met the love of my life and he went with me on that trip to Maui. We were married 10 1/2 months later.
This isn’t so much a mental trick of mine but a reminder to always leave room for God, especially when I appear to be at the end of my rope, when I think I’ve done all I can do. When I’m feeling hopeless: But, God. When I’m feeling broken: But, God. When I feel like it’s never going to happen: But, God.
Side not to anyone who is waiting for God to bring you the love of your life:
Some time before I met my love, I was praying, I’ve grown so much, what else do You need me to do? What else do You need me to learn? How do You need me to be different in order to be ready for the man You have for me?” And I felt God say, You’re ready. He isn’t yet.
Turns out my love had been single for 2 years and not interested in dating at all. He only opened himself up to dating less than two weeks before we met!
It is possible that you have some work to do on yourself in order to attract the person God has for you. It’s also possible that you are ready and just need to be patient for your love to be ready for you.
